Marijuana/Hash – Is it harmless?

According to the Texas Department  of Health Services statistics for the year 2006, there were 6,665 people admitted into state funded substance abuse problem for abuse of marijuana and hash.  This is out of 55,155 admissions total for that year into state funded substance abuse treatment programs.

There were a couple of very interesting points regarding those statistics.  One of the statistics for admissions into the substance abuse centers is how many of the patients admitted  are involved with criminal justices.. For those admitted for marijuana and has, the percentage of those involved with criminal justice is 47%. This percentage is higher than any other type of abuse including heroin, and amphetamines.  The age at which use was started is the very lowest at 15.  Average of first use for those admitted for treatment for alcoholism is 16 years old. Age of those admitted for marijuana or hash addicted is also lower than any of the other categories at 27 years old.

These statistics from Texas certainly gives food for thought in the debate to the degree of harm that marijuana and has h cause, whether it should be legalized and treated and what message should be send to our kids and youth regarding these drugs.  There are celebrities such as Bill Marr who on his show makes little to nothing to smoking pot. In fact he promotes it as something good to do. How can that be the case if over 6000 youth have to be admitted just into the state funded programs in Texas for treatment and when almost half of them are involved in the criminal justice system.

I would say that it is a serious detriment to a persons live that they have to gone to treatment for substance abuse and be criminally involved. Those two things often makes it very hard for someone to get a job. It would be interesting to see how many of these who start using marijuana and hash at a young age even make it through a college education or are able to obtain decent jobs.

Holland is an example of legalization of marijuana. I am familiar only with one treatment program in that country, but I do know that they have a very hard time getting addicts actually drug free as they think once they are off, for example, opiates, they can continue smoking pot. It requires a lot of education to tell someone that a substance that you can buy legally is so harmful.

The Texas statistics quoted here make it clear that there is harm for youth in using marijuana. What can we do? One thing for parents to consider is that if they know that their child is using these drugs, should seek treatment and not brush it off as something “normal” that all kids do. The other thing is to educate our youth on the complete truth about all drugs. If they really know, most of them will make sane decisions on their own.

Choosing Drug Rehab Programs E-mail

Choosing Drug Rehab

Choosing a drug and alcohol rehab is similar to choosing a treatment for any serious disease, like cancer or heart disease, in that there are many choices. However, the difference in choosing one of these traditional medical programs and looking for alcohol and drug rehab lies in the level of professional expertise and an assumed predictable success. Most hospitals that are treating cancer or heart disease are employing clinical techniques that have are founded in research and have clinical protocols that are similar in all facilities and proven to be successful.  Alcohol and drug rehab programs haven't reached that level of understanding and training.

Alcohol and drug rehab programs are based on the clinical orientation that their management "feels" is the most successful, therefore, there are programs where you can complete their regime in 21 days and others that require a year or more.  There are drug rehab programs that will dress you up like Pinokio when you tell a lie or have you stand in the corner for disobedience, and there are other alcohol and drug rehab programs that will try to convince you that you have an "inner child" that is crying for attention or is just lonely and "needs a hug".  Find the right treatment center is not just confusing, it is bewildering.

You may naturally think that the longer a program takes, the better its outcomes, but that isn't the case.  Many times the year long programs get about the same, shameful, lack of success as the 21-30 programs.

So what is best and how do you choose which programs have the best success in handling your problem or that of a loved one?

You enlist the help of trained 3rd party specialist who can guide you through your treatment options carefully explaining the pros and cons of each along with documented recovery rate statistics. However, because the internet doesn't guarantee that you are necessarily talking with someone that really is a professional that has the education and experience to actually be an "expert" in this field.

If you call our hotline, you will be talking to a professional with a Master's Degree and PhD training in the rehab field, someone that has over 30 years of experience as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and has reviewed over 150 rehab program on site.

Many of the other sites on the web had "counselors" that have been to rehab and are speaking from their experience. That information is important, as well, but it isn't a legitimate comparative analysis of the different programs.  It is an opinion.  They may be "certified drug counselors", which is also important, but certification indicates that the person has two to three years of experience in the field and was able to pass an exam about his knowledge.  This could be valuable information and we are not saying that you shouldn't get as much data as possible, but keep in mind that there are many level of expertise and the more education and experience that the telephone counselor has, the more reliable is the information.

In calling other website, we have found that the above information is accurate, but there are also people who profess to be knowledgeable and educated, but we were able to discern that their data was inaccurate and it would be more truthful if they said that they were salesmen and not alcohol and drug rehab professionals.

 NOTE TO PARENTS:

Over the many years that we have been in this alcohol and drug rehab field, we have learned that many times addicts get into their addicted condition with understandable innocence and that once they reclaim a straight/drug-free life, they are some of the best people, parents and loving individuals in our society. A person's character grows after being enslaved to alcohol and drugs and finding freedom.  It is well worth finding a center that is effective.  You may think that you can't afford another drug rehab and, certainly you can't afford another failure, but the cost involved in ending this addictive and setting you child on a path of success is a very small price to pay.  Let our counselors help you look into ways that the program can be financed or other options.

12 step Recovery Model These methods are better known as Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. 12 Step was developed in 1934 by two Alcoholics who found a way to stay sober with these steps usually 21- 28 days. Some private facilities offer longer term Case. It has been around the longest and there was some moderate success in the beginning. When hard drugs showed up into our culture it was a natural progression to use 12 step methods on these addictions, as there was nothing else available. The method grew across the nation, as there was nothing else that was available to be used. For this simple reason 12 step is available almost anywhere. Today the success rate is approximately 5%-10% depending on the facility you choose. Private Facilities will yield a somewhat higher rate of success.

Behavior Modification

Second there is the Behavioral Modification Method. Behavioral Modification was developed to work on the A Social Personality, or a person who was self centered. This method relies on boot camp style tactics where the individual is berated by groups of peers and then hopefully rebuilt into a more social person. There has been some use for this method with young teenagers who are on a warpath to destroy society. However the success is only very marginally about 10%, in most cases other methods are recommended. Due to that reason very few drug rehab centers use this method.

Long Term Faith-based Programs

Third is the long term religious based model of treatment. In this methodology the individual is required to go away for 1 to 2 years, and work on a farm. Example: Farming. This method is also combined with a heavy religious aspect of prayer, and bible study. The success rate is hard to determine as only about 10% of people will make it to the full completion of this method, however of those completing it will be around 20% - 40% who stay clean form hard drugs. Due to the long term it is usually not available to most addicts, and waiting lists are long.

Biophysical Programs

Fourth is the Bio-Physical rehabilitation. This method gets toxins out of the body in a purification sauna. What was found through research is that the human body will store a residue called a metabolite in the fat tissue for 5 to 7 years after drug abuse. This Residue causes cravings, anxiety, and depression. Also the drugs like heroin, oxycontin, cocaine, and meth are more powerful than the chemicals the brain produces to be happy. It takes 1 year for this chemical balance to be restored. The Bio-Physical method uses a purification sauna, and vitamins to release residues stored in fat tissue so that there are no more cravings, anxiety or depression caused by the drug abuse side effects. The chemical balances also will come back much faster with the exercise and vitamins. This enables the person to have a fighting chance. This type of drug rehabilitation center will use social educational classes to restore or build skills to make the individual a drug free and productive member of society. Drug Rehab Programs with this method are having a success rate of over 76%. This is why Bio-Physical drug treatment centers are usually recommended for drug addiction in our society today.
