Marijuana/Hash – Is it harmless?

According to the Texas Department  of Health Services statistics for the year 2006, there were 6,665 people admitted into state funded substance abuse problem for abuse of marijuana and hash.  This is out of 55,155 admissions total for that year into state funded substance abuse treatment programs.

There were a couple of very interesting points regarding those statistics.  One of the statistics for admissions into the substance abuse centers is how many of the patients admitted  are involved with criminal justices.. For those admitted for marijuana and has, the percentage of those involved with criminal justice is 47%. This percentage is higher than any other type of abuse including heroin, and amphetamines.  The age at which use was started is the very lowest at 15.  Average of first use for those admitted for treatment for alcoholism is 16 years old. Age of those admitted for marijuana or hash addicted is also lower than any of the other categories at 27 years old.

These statistics from Texas certainly gives food for thought in the debate to the degree of harm that marijuana and has h cause, whether it should be legalized and treated and what message should be send to our kids and youth regarding these drugs.  There are celebrities such as Bill Marr who on his show makes little to nothing to smoking pot. In fact he promotes it as something good to do. How can that be the case if over 6000 youth have to be admitted just into the state funded programs in Texas for treatment and when almost half of them are involved in the criminal justice system.

I would say that it is a serious detriment to a persons live that they have to gone to treatment for substance abuse and be criminally involved. Those two things often makes it very hard for someone to get a job. It would be interesting to see how many of these who start using marijuana and hash at a young age even make it through a college education or are able to obtain decent jobs.

Holland is an example of legalization of marijuana. I am familiar only with one treatment program in that country, but I do know that they have a very hard time getting addicts actually drug free as they think once they are off, for example, opiates, they can continue smoking pot. It requires a lot of education to tell someone that a substance that you can buy legally is so harmful.

The Texas statistics quoted here make it clear that there is harm for youth in using marijuana. What can we do? One thing for parents to consider is that if they know that their child is using these drugs, should seek treatment and not brush it off as something “normal” that all kids do. The other thing is to educate our youth on the complete truth about all drugs. If they really know, most of them will make sane decisions on their own.

  • Intervention  ( 1 items )
Addiction intervention is often needed to help a person lost in the cravings and entrapments of addiction. When a person is currently immersed in their addiction, substance abuse and the life style that accompanies this use, they often neglect to see the simple truth of how detrimental their drug or alcohol use has been on their body, family and life in general.

When this is true for a person who is addicted an intervention is called for. Regardless of whether the intervention is performed by family and friends guided by an intervention consultant or a professional interventionist are called to the scene to perform an onsite intervention. The onsite intervention usually involves the professional intervention counselor, key family members or friends and of course, the person addicted.

When planning an intervention there are numerous things to keep in mind. Among the many aspects of intervention, medical safety should be first and foremost. When a person withdraws from certain drugs such as benzodiazepines like Zanax or alcohol when used very heavily, they can suffer life threatening consequences from abruptly ceasing to use. Usually called “cold turkey” the family should be aware of the safety precautions associated with the individual’s choice of substances and act accordingly.

Additionally, when planning an intervention, those involved would ideally have the right circumstances surrounding the addict when the intervention occurs. Attempting an intervention with someone for instance addicted to cocaine when they are currently under the influence and have an adequate amount of the drug in their possession will likely be found to be ineffective while that same person may respond positively the next day when the cocaine is gone and the withdrawal has set in.

In actual fact there are many factors that should guide the decisions of when to perform and intervention, who should be present and exactly what should occur to establish the right setting in order to reach the most fruitful outcome. • Detox  ( 1 items )
Often, detox is a necessary 1st step in a drug rehab or alcohol rehab program. Many legal and illegal drugs as well as alcohol when consumed in large quantities and for extended periods of time can be life threatening when a person just stops using. Usually called “cold turkey”, the process of simply ceasing to use the drug or alcohol can sometimes be a serious health risk as well as a miserable and painful experience for the person addicted. This factor alone drives thousands back to using their drug of choice every day in the United States because the withdrawal is too painful or they have been told it is too dangerous to quit using the substance they are addicted to.

It should be noted that detox is not drug rehab. The detox process can be short in duration, or in the case of extensive cellular cleansing processes, up to 30 to 45 days. Regardless of what type of detox protocol a person employs there will still be the rest of the addiction to handle or the individual will likely return to drug or alcohol usage.

When you call we will guide you through the decision making process of which detox method to employ as well as direct you to a drug rehab or alcohol rehab treatment planning that will help ensure your loved one leaves addiction behind for good. It is important to make sure the detox method employed will work in concert with the addiction treatment protocol chosen so that the transition is as transparent as possible. For instance you would not want to employ a detox facility that will place a person on prescription drugs meant to be taken indefinitely when you have chosen a treatment program which operates to get the individual free from all drugs and alcohol.

Call us today and we will help you formulate a plan of detox and other services to ensure your loved one successfully recovers from the nightmares of addiction.
